AI and website speed: why AI-built websites load slowly and how to make them fast again

AI can build your website in an afternoon. Building fast and loading fast are two different things.

A website built in a day that loads like it is 2012

AI can generate a website in an afternoon. What takes it minutes would take an agency weeks — and exactly that speed is both tempting and dangerous. A tool that builds a site in a day did not optimise it. The images, scripts, fonts, and code it generated are functional, but not economical. The result loads slowly, and you only find out once Google starts pushing you down and visitors leave before the page even renders.

The worst part is that you cannot see it on your own computer. A fast laptop, fast wifi, a browser with memory to spare — everything loads instantly. But your customer opens the site on a phone over weak mobile data on the tram. And there, every extra second equals a visitor who gave up.

What AI skips when it generates

It is not that AI is lazy. It generates a website from patterns that are meant to work first and be fast second. These are the specific things that most often go wrong in automatic generation.

Full-size images. AI drops in a photo exactly as it finds it — at print resolution, not screen resolution. A five-megabyte image where a hundred kilobytes would do. One photo like that slows a page down more than everything else combined.

Unused code. Generated websites drag along libraries and scripts the page does not actually use. Analytics, fonts, sliders, chatbots — everything loads even when the visitor never sees it.

Fonts from other servers. A nice typeface that downloads from somewhere else, every time, and waits for a foreign server. The page stands still until the font arrives.

The order things load in. A website should download the important parts first — the text and the main message. But when the order is wrong, the main content waits for an ad script that is not responding.

Each of these is a small thing on its own. Together they turn a fast website into a slow one — and nobody looks at it until it starts to hurt.

Why speed matters for a small business

Website speed does not look like a business topic. It is technical, so companies put it off. But for a small business, speed hits money directly, twice over.

Google measures and punishes. The search engine grades speed and pushes slow sites down the rankings. This is not a small nudge — mobile users, who are the majority of visitors, get fast pages first. When your site is slow, a competitor shows up above you without being any better.

Visitors leave. The rule is hard: every extra second means a measurable drop in the people who stay. On a shop and on an enquiry form alike. A slow website is not just annoying — it is an enquiry you never received because the form loaded two seconds too late.

The good news is that this is one of the few places where the result can be measured. Speed is not estimated, speed is measured. And once you measure it, you know exactly where you stand and where you are moving.

One sentence that tells you it is bad

The test for speed fits in one question: would you open your own website on a phone in the tram and wait for it? If you would wait, your customers probably will too. If you would give up, so will they — only they will never tell you, they will simply leave.

A slow website does not complain. Nobody writes to you saying “your site loaded slowly, so I left”. People just click back and keep searching. All those exits look like “visitors who were not interested” in the analytics. But it was speed, not the offer.

How to use AI to fix it — step by step

The irony is pleasant: the same tool that slowed the website down can also speed it up. You just have to tell it what to look at. This is the process that works.

Measure before you fix. Have AI go through the speed measurements — Core Web Vitals, page sizes, what takes longest to load. AI turns the numbers into a list of specific problems, sorted by what slows things down the most.

Start with images. They usually solve half the problem. AI compresses the images, shrinks them to the size a screen actually needs, and generates variants for mobile and desktop. It is the fastest and biggest win.

Clear out what is unused. Have AI go through the scripts and libraries and mark the ones the page does not need. Less code means faster loading and fewer things that can break.

Fix the loading order. AI can see that the main content is waiting for something at the bottom of the page and suggest what to load first and what to defer. The text and the main message appear immediately, the rest fills in afterwards.

Measure again. After every change, measure again and compare. That way you know the fix actually helped — and did not just change numbers somewhere that does not matter.

The whole cycle — measure, fix, measure again — takes hours on a smaller site. The speed-up it brings is measured in seconds your customers no longer have to wait.

What AI cannot fix

AI is great at what can be measured and automated. But there are decisions it cannot make for you — and should not.

What to sacrifice for speed. Sometimes speed conflicts with something you want: a large photo gallery, a video on the homepage, animations. AI can shrink and defer these things, but it cannot decide whether they should stay on the site. That is a business decision — what matters more to you.

What is actually slow. AI shows that the site is slow and finds the causes. But sometimes the real cause is elsewhere — cheap hosting, an old server, a misconfigured domain. No code or image fix solves that.

Whether the whole thing makes sense. AI proposes dozens of changes. Deciding which are worth it and which are cosmetic has to be done by someone who understands your business. Otherwise you end up endlessly tuning numbers instead of getting a real result.

A checklist for a fast website

  1. Measure speed on mobile, not desktop. Mobile is where people actually open you.
  2. Compress the images and generate them in the right sizes for every screen.
  3. Remove the scripts and libraries that load but are never used.
  4. Set the loading order so the main message arrives first.
  5. Measure again and compare. A fix you cannot measure does not count.
  6. Check the hosting. The best website in the world will be slow on a slow server.

Speed is not a detail

Website speed is easy to put off as “a technical detail for later”. But it decides before you even get to show what you can do. A visitor does not judge your website by what is on it — they judge it by whether it loaded before they ran out of patience.
